In the Loupe

Welcome to “In the Loupe!” As a goldsmith at Plumb Gold Ltd., I am asked a lot of questions. In any given day I hear “Hey Becky!?” at least fifty times. The questions range from the most basic jewelry repair inquiries to complicated design problems. The most common questions I get are about how to take care of jewelry. My answer is...preventative medicine!

For rings with gemstones I recommend bringing them in every six months for a thorough cleaning. During this time, we will also check if any repairs are needed. The most common issue with rings is worn, broken or bent prongs. If ever you feel a sharp or catching prong, bring your piece in immediately! This is a sign of a damaged or lifted prong which could lead to the loss of your diamond or gemstone.

There is not as much concern for pendants, slides and earrings because they do not take as much abuse as rings. However, these should occasionally be checked as well.

Always keep in mind that, even though jewelry is made of metal and stones, it should be worn with care. To keep your jewelry in great condition, I advise against wearing it during activities such as exercising, swimming, doing dishes, or gardening.

Remember, jewelry needs TLC just like anything else. Even the highest quality heirloom pieces will need maintenance along the way.

Now is a great time to have your jewelry repaired, refurbished or redesigned so you can wear it and enjoy it with confidence!
