In the Loupe

Welcome to “In the Loupe”! We have all heard that people are choosing fair trade options when buying products such as coffee, tea, chocolate, crafts and clothing. Now, more than ever, jewelry consumers are choosing the fair trade option when selecting gems.

Companies dealing in fair trade gems invest in the local economies where mining is done by providing money for schools, clean drinking water and medical services for miner’s families. Binding contracts provide living wages usually three times higher than workers earn elsewhere. These contracts also ensure environmental protection, and set health and safety standards.

These programs treat those who mine cut and manufacture their products with respect and believe that consumers have the right to know what they are buying and how it was produced.

The practices of the fair trade gem industry ensure that workers receive just and equitable treatment which helps to build long term relationships around the world. These stones have been monitored and closely tracked through every step of the process. This assures the buyer that their jewelry complies with strict standards during its journey from “mine to design.”

When mining is completed fair trade companies replant the sites and restore them as close as possible to their original conditions.

In the past it was difficult to find companies marketing ethically produced gems...but that is changing!
