In the Loupe

Welcome to “In the Loupe!” Many times, I am confronted with questions like...What is gemology? Why is it important to buy jewelry from a gemologist? Simply put, GEM-ology is the study of diamonds and gemstones.

Even though this sounds simple, I can assure you that becoming a Graduate Gemologist (GG) is a long and challenging process. A Graduate Gemology degree is the gem and jewelry industry’s most prestigious and coveted professional credential. The foremost authority for obtaining a graduate gemology degree is the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Becoming a GG requires eight courses that culminate in a gem identification class in which I had to identify 500 gem stones. For the lab portions of my course work, I traveled to GIA’s campus in Carlsbad, California.

You may ask, how does this affect my jewelry purchases or repairs?

GIA is dedicated to ensuring the public’s trust in gems and jewelry by upholding standards of integrity and professionalism. As a goldsmith and a GG, I always strive for perfection so that I don’t make costly mistakes with sentimental heirlooms. Knowing and understanding the characteristics of each gem helps me to do my job better.

With the recent completion of my GG degree, Plumb Gold now has three full time gemologists on staff, with a fourth in training.

Remember, there is a lot of science behind fine jewelry and gems and the emotions they convey. By shopping with a jeweler who is also a gemologist, the guesswork is taken out of the equation. You can be assured that the quality and high standards are passed on to you.
